Beaches to Boardrooms: The Melati Wijsen Story

Imagine being 12 years old and staring down a problem bigger than yourself: plastic pollution choking the island you call home.

That's exactly what Melati Wijsen faced while growing up in Bali, witnessing paradise drowning in plastic bags. But despair wasn't an option.

Instead, Melati, joined by her younger sister Isabel, decided to be the change they wanted to see in the world.

"Seeing the reality of this growing problem around us, with plastic ending up in places it shouldn't, we felt this urgency to protect what we love: the environment and the natural world," Melati told Imagine5.

Their journey began with a simple question: "What can we do?" From beach cleanups to school presentations, the sisters' passion ignited a movement called Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB).

It wasn't easy, facing naysayers and bureaucratic hurdles. But Melati and Isabel, armed with facts, youthful determination, and infectious smiles, refused to be deterred.

Think Big, Start Small

BBPB didn't just target plastic bags. They understood the power of community and education. They engaged local businesses, empowered women with sustainable alternatives, and inspired countless youth to join the fight.

Their message resonated globally, sparking BBPB chapters around the world, proving that environmental solutions can bee local and global at the same time.

Now, at 19, Melati is a force of nature. Her TED Talks inspire millions, her Youthtopia platform amplifies young voices, and her unwavering commitment continues to push boundaries.

From advocating for policy changes to leading massive cleanups, she embodies the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and audacious optimism.

Melati's story is a reminder that age is just a number. Just like a single bee does its part to create honey, each of us can contribute to a healthier planet.

As Melati says: "You have power as an individual. It can feel tiny, but your actions matter."

Join the movement, support sustainable practices, and remember, even the smallest actions can create a ripple effect of positive change.

Let's all #BeTheChange alongside Melati and together, build a future where every day is #EarthDay!
